Andrew Malcolmson
I’m relatively new to the dental space, so there’s still plenty for me to learn — but I’ve spent over 25 years in MedTech, working across everything from large multinationals like Medtronic to early-stage start-ups. That’s given me a good perspective on both the scale and agility that different environments bring.
I trained as an engineer, but early on I realised I was most energised by working directly with customers — understanding how the products we create actually make a difference in their day-to-day work — so I naturally moved into more commercial roles.
I’ve been based in Colorado for the past 20 years, which is a fantastic place to live. Although I don’t get to take full advantage of the skiing as often as I’d like, my wife and I certainly stay busy keeping up with our six children!

Future of Dental Imaging
What excites you most about the future of dental imaging technologies today—and where do you see the biggest disruption coming from?
This is the question that the entire Carestream Dental team spends a lot of time thinking about and debating. We continuously ask ourselves what the dental community and patients still lack today, and how we can focus our development efforts on the most meaningful problems to solve. The answer centres on enhancing clinical insight within a solution environment that is intuitive, configurable, and secure. Clinicians want to focus on patients and outcomes, rather than managing complexity. The biggest disruption will come from solutions that simplify the experience while delivering deeper insights.
AI, Data and Digital Ecosystems
What role will AI, automation, and data play in evolving dental imaging capabilities?
There are several clichés we could use here— “doctors are data rich but information poor,” for example—but the real challenge lies not in identifying the problem, but in addressing it effectively.
Historically, Carestream Dental has been a creator of clinical data—from 2D and 3D imaging (CBCT) to panoramic systems—enabling clinicians to review and interpret high-quality images using their expertise.
With the evolution of digital dentistry, however, an expanding ecosystem of tools has introduced both opportunity and complexity. Our role is therefore evolving beyond data creation to helping clinicians make full use of these tools within an intuitive, integrated environment they can adapt to their workflow.
At the same time, this must be underpinned by strong data management—ensuring regulatory compliance, patient confidentiality, and security are always maintained. Ultimately, AI, automation, and data should reduce complexity, enhance clinical insight, and allow practitioners to focus on patient outcomes.
“It’s not just about creating data—it’s about enabling meaningful insight from it.”
Balancing Innovation and Practicality
How do you ensure you remain both pioneers and practical partners to your customers?
Striking this balance is a challenge for companies across all industries, but at Carestream Dental, it’s something we’ve been able to achieve consistently for over 100 years.
From playing a foundational role in the development of dental imaging, to helping catalyse the digital transformation of the industry with the introduction of the first digital intraoral sensor (RVG), through to a steady cadence of innovation that has helped bring 3D imaging into mainstream practice, our focus has remained constant.
That focus is on supporting the needs of our customers today, while anticipating how technological advancement will expand what is possible in the future—and ensuring those innovations are delivered in ways that are practical and meaningful in real clinical environments.

Standing Out in a Converging Market
How do you stand out in a world where technology is rapidly converging?
There are a number of ways we are approaching this—both to take advantage of increasing technology convergence and to protect the proprietary capabilities that differentiate our products in the market.
Take 3D X-ray sensors as an example. Many suppliers have adopted alternative technologies that have advanced through their use in other industries, driving down costs and increasing supplier availability.
At Carestream Dental, however, we have made a deliberate choice to leverage CMOS sensor technology in our CBCT systems, recognising its advantages in speed, integration, and overall image performance. At the same time, we believe that, given the critical role the sensor plays in system function, it is not enough to rely on off-the-shelf solutions.
Radiology is the first step in almost every digital dental workflow — whether 2D or 3D — and the quality and accuracy of that image directly influence every step that follows, from diagnosis through to treatment planning and execution.
Our approach is therefore to maintain and continuously improve our proprietary design, combining CMOS technology with our own architecture and working closely with a long-term premium manufacturing partner. This commitment to quality is reflected in the fact that we were the first CBCT manufacturer to receive certification with the DDS Quality Stamp — recognising that our solutions meet the highest standards for integration into digital dental workflows.
Ultimately, this enables us to deliver the level of precision and reliability that our customers trust and depend on in daily clinical practice.
“Clinicians want to focus on patients and outcomes — not managing equipment, software, and IT.”
Leadership and Culture
What lessons from your past roles are most relevant to this position?
The one universal constant I bring to this role is quite simple: it’s all about the people.
Customers who are engaged, communicative, and passionate about what they do have been critical to Carestream Dental’s success from day one—and that will only become more important as technology advances and the dental delivery model continues to evolve.
Equally, it’s our employees — those who are capable, creative, and genuinely passionate about their work — who deliver the elevated customer experience and product innovation those customers expect and deserve.
When you have the right people, and you consistently take care of and deliver for your customers, everything else tends to fall into place.

What excites you most about leading Carestream Dental at this stage in its evolution?
It’s the dynamic nature of the dental industry and the opportunities it creates for companies that listen closely to their customers and can move quickly.
Many within the Carestream Dental team have spent their entire careers serving the dental community — some dating back to Trophy, Kodak, and now Carestream Dental — and they stay because there are always new challenges to overcome, new solutions to deliver, and new approaches to explore.
What I aim to bring is a commitment to enabling faster decision-making and being willing to take the right level of risk, so we can continue to respond to evolving customer needs and strengthen both our market leadership and the trust our customers place in us.
Customer Engagement
What message would you like to share with dental professionals?
Talk to us. Your feedback helps us improve and better support your practice and patients. Carestream Dental exists because of our customers — both today and in the future — and the more we hear from you, the better we can support your practice, your business, and, ultimately, your patients.
