The Dental Hygienist as a key player in the digital transformation: Innovation, prevention and professional evolution in the era of digital dentistry

Tonia Auletta & Danilo Schiavone

Tonia Auletta graduated in Dental Hygiene from Sapienza Università di Roma, and holds further specialization in periodontal and implant therapies, obtained with a Master’s program in Naples.

Danilo Schiavone graduated and obtained professional qualification in Dental Hygiene from the University of Naples Federico II in 2021.

Today, we speak with Dr. Tonia Auletta and Dr. Danilo Schiavone, dental hygienists and active members of the Digital Dentistry Society (DDS), about the evolving role of dental hygienists within the digital workflow.

How did you get to know DDS?

We became familiar with DDS through the initiatives promoted by the Italian Ambassadorial activities, which have played a significant role in spreading digital culture in dentistry.

Educational projects, scientific meetings, and networking initiatives enabled us to connect with an international community strongly committed to innovation and clinical excellence.

What does DDS represent for you?

DDS represents a key resource for professionals working in digital dentistry. It provides continuous scientific updates, encourages international collaboration and fosters professional growth within an interdisciplinary environment.

Would you recommend DDS to other dental hygienists?

Absolutely. Digital dentistry is increasingly integrated into daily clinical routines, and dental hygienists greatly benefit from the use of intraoral scanners, digital monitoring systems and advanced communication tools. Being part of DDS means actively contributing to the future of the profession.

You attended the last DDS Global Congress in Venice (October 16–18, 2025). What was your experience?

The congress was an inspiring and enriching experience. It provided comprehensive insight into the latest technological innovations, from intraoral scanning to digital diagnostic software and integrated clinical workflows. Events like this reinforce the strategic role of the dental hygienist within the digital team.

What is the role of the dental hygienist in oral and systemic health?

Dental hygienists are highly trained healthcare professionals who follow patients with a personalized and prevention-oriented approach.

Their contribution extends beyond oral care, supporting overall systemic health through education, motivation and continuous monitoring.

“The dental hygienist’s role will become increasingly central as technology evolves. Digital innovation will not replace professionals; rather, it will enhance their clinical, decision-making and communication skills.”

What are the main competencies and responsibilities of the dental hygienist?

Thanks to university education and continuous professional development, dental hygienists operate in both public and private settings, playing a central role in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. They motivate patients toward healthier lifestyles and actively collaborate within digital clinical protocols.

Is the dental hygienist authorized to take traditional and digital impressions?

Yes. According to the Italian Ministerial Decree n. 137 of March 15, 1999, professional competencies are defined by the purpose of the clinical act. Within their scope of practice, dental hygienists are authorized to take both traditional and digital impressions in compliance with current regulations.

What are the main benefits of digitalization in clinical practice?

Digitalization improves efficiency, safety and diagnostic accuracy while enhancing communication with patients. It enables more precise diagnoses, faster treatments and a better overall clinical experience, optimizing workflows and strengthening teamwork.

What does the future of the profession look like?

The dental hygienist’s role will become increasingly central as technology evolves. Digital innovation will not replace professionals; rather, it will enhance their clinical, decision-making and communication skills. Artificial intelligence, data analysis and digital monitoring systems represent exciting opportunities for more personalized and predictive prevention. The real challenge will be integrating these technologies ethically and responsibly, always keeping the patient at the center of care.

Key Takeaways

  • Continuous updating on digital technologies
  • Integration of intraoral scanners in preventive protocols
  • Greater diagnostic precision and workflow efficiency
  • Improved patient communication and engagement

How to Prepare for the Digital Future

  1. Strengthen university education with advanced technological competencies
  2. Actively participate in international scientific congresses and DDS initiatives
  3. Adopt digital innovations ethically and responsibly within patient-centered care.

Thank you, Tonia and Danilo, for sharing your insights and experiences. It’s been a pleasure.

You’re welcome! Thanks for this opportunity.
