Digital Dentistry Society joined Expo Dubai 2020 with a special event hosted by the Italian Pavilion
On February 7th, sitting President Prof. Jaafar Mouhyi, former President Prof. Giuseppe Luongo and DDS Scientific Committee member Prof. Fernando Zarone took part in the event focused on “The digital smile patient: a proposal for an innovative didactical and clinical approach”.
The main theme of the event was the approach to the dental patient with an entirely digital workflow, through the use of innovative diagnostic-operative tools, from intra-oral scanners for the digital impression of dental arches to face scanners and CBCT, in order to create a 3D “digital patient” file, on which the clinician analyzes and diagnoses, and on which the treatment can be planned by the operators of the dental team: prosthodontist, surgeon, dental technician, orthodontist, etc.
Prof. Jaafar Mouhyi introduced to the audience and the Italian Ministry delegates the DDS Mission and shared what is in the DDS agenda for the future, in terms of the possibilities of using technology to deliver better care for patients. “DDS is the only Digital Society existing today in this field focusing on different kind of Digital works”, said the President. “Our mission is to test workflows and tools available and to help dentists who want to go Digital, moving from analogical dentistry. It will not be an easy task: we have to remove all habits, materials and a lot of products. But it is a new era for Dentistry and for teaching and education“.
Prof. Giuseppe Luongo lectured about the most advanced techniques in Digital Oral Surgery, showing some cases about the modern daily approach on using Digital technologies in Dentistry.
Prof. Fernando Zarone, host of the event with Università di Napoli Federico II, showcased to the live audience how Mixed Reality can reshape the concept of learning, by lecturing the attendees and his own students connected from Naples thanks to TINALP, the Mixed Reality learning platform developed by FifthIngenium, a DDS partner company .

Both the in-person and online attendees were able to experience with their own eyes how Mixed Reality is not a futuristic concept, rather a very practical mean of enhancing, improving and facilitating institutions, teachers and students in sharing and acquiring knowledge and skills.
Prof. Zarone, Chair of Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at Federico II University’s Department of Neuroscience, Reproductive Sciences and Dentistry, lectured the in-person attendees of the event in Dubai and his own students connected from their classroom in Italy, by leveraging the opportunities that this learning platform provides.
Students and attendees were able to visualize 2D and 3D data of 2 separate complex cases treated by Prof. Zarone patients by wearing either Microsoft Hololens 2, Nreal Light, their own smartphones, or by the live-stream coming from the teacher’s headset. The interaction was made possible by the proprietary 3D synchronization technology, which allows the perfect sync between people in the same physical environment as well as those connected remotely.
