The field of dentistry, traditionally viewed as a science bound by physical
examination and manual dexterity, is on the brink of a technological revolution. Digital dentistry is rapidly evolving, propelled by innovations in artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), 3D and 4D printing, bioprinting and robotics. These advances promise not only to enhance the precision and efficiency of dental procedures but also to redefine patient care and experience.
AI is bringing precision and predictive power to dentistry, transforming it and enabling more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning. AI algorithms can analyze vast amounts of data from dental records and imaging studies to identify patterns that the human eye might miss.
AR is making significant inroads into dental education and team and patient communication. For patients, AR can be a powerful tool for visualising treatment outcomes, helping them to better understand their dental conditions and the proposed interventions.
With advances in printing technologies, combining hybrid materials with 3D printing represents the cutting-edge of dental restoration technology. 3D printing enables the integration of different materials, allowing the creation of truly hybrid restorations. This synergy not only enhances the mechanical properties of the restorations, combining the strength and durability of ceramic with the flexibility and ease of manipulation of composite resin, but also provides high marginal trueness, precision, workflow efficiency and low costs.
4D printing is poised to revolutionise dentistry by enabling the creation of objects that can interact dynamically with their environments and perform functions that are impossible with traditional manufacturing techniques. Bioprinting is promising to revolutionise dental prosthetics and tissue regeneration. Beyond prosthetics, bioprinting promises to regenerate dental tissues, bone and soft tissue and even teeth using a patient’s own cells.
Robotic technology is enhancing the precision and efficiency of implant dental procedures by providing micrometre precision, ensuring optimal alignment and integration with the jawbone. Guided surgery, augmented by MR, represents the pinnacle of technological integration in dentistry, combining the physical and digital worlds, enabling interactions with holographic images of the plan superimposed onto the patient’s situation. This technology allows for unparalleled precision in implant surgeries. The convergence of AI, AR, MR, advanced printing and robotics is poised to transform dentistry into a high-tech field that delivers superior patient care through precision, efficiency and personalised treatment.
